Five diaries covering the following periods: 1. 9 Sept. 1904-1915 Jan. 1905 (137 p.); 2. 8 Feb. 1905-1929 July 1905 (114 p.); 3. 28 June 1906-1922 July 1906 (80 p.); 4. Nov. 1907-12 Dec. 1907 (22 p.); 5. 28 May 1908-1929 June 1908 (89 p.). Topics includes an account of Im Thurn's visit to Tonga in July 1905, a conference in Noumea 1908, a visit to the New Hebrides (1907), the proclamation of the Anglo-French Condominium, 1907 and a tour of the New Hebrides, New Caledonia and Norfolk Island, (diary no. 5). Other subjects referred to include disputes between settlers and natives, relations with Fijian chiefs, the King of Tonga and with French officials in the New Hebrides, plantations and miss trade with New Zealand, public finance, social events and ceremonies. There are also references to Lord Stanmore and Sir John Thurston.

Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon, first Baron Stanmore (1829-1912) was born in London and served from 1854 to 1857 as a member of the House of Commons. Gordon served as Governor of Trinidad (1866-1870), Mauritius (1871-1874), Fiji (1875-1880), New Zealand (1880-1882) and Ceylon (1883-1890).
